Messing with Texas

I made this jumbo dog bed for my dad a few years ago; it's now for sale on Etsy. My cats turned it into a Texas geography lesson.
Above, Homer stares out from the Panhandle at Liesl lounging in New Mexico.
Daisy dips into the Gulf of Mexico (above) while Homer slips past El Paso.
Homer does Dallas with his tail wrapped around Big Bend. Liesl heads for the Colorado Rockies.

All-star benchwarmers

My homemade benches are like Lego blocks for backyard kitty lounging. Below are Daisy's tail end (left) and a sleepy-eyed Homer.Below is Sailor when he still had his chocolate back stripe.Be not deceived by Betty's alluring smile; the jaws of a beast lurk within (la Bete = the beast).Below is Gus, my eldest feral, the most charming boy I cannot touch.

Upsy Daisy

As the weather gets colder, Daisy makes like a solar panel, absorbing the maximum available sunshine. She even gets exposure where the sun don't shine.

All quiet next door

They moved away a month ago -- my cat-loving neighbors Taylor and Hope, ages 9 and 11. Their family left around the same time my feral kittens arrived, so I've been focusing on the kittens instead of missing Hope and Taylor. But I loved those girls.

They had a wacky yet sophisticated sense of humor. They were so tuned in to my cats' personalities, and the cats loved hanging out with the girls. We laughed hard and had such creative fun playing with the kitties during the short year they lived next door.Taylor had a silly compulsion to squeeze into small spaces (above). She insisted on crawling into my oversize cat carrier. She also inserted herself into the rolled-up white plastic sheeting I use as a backdrop for kitty bed photo shoots. She looks like a cigarette. The contrasting expressions (above) of Hope and my cat Daisy are so true to form -- Hope's dear sweetness and Daisy's haughty disdain.

Group portrait with benches

I made these 14 benches from old discarded wood left over after I rebuilt my fence. The benches are perfectly proportioned for me and the cats. I rearrange them all the time, all over the yard. The kitties-in-the-round are, clockwise from center bottom: Natalie, Linus, Olga (face and paw only), Gidget, Daisy (back only), Alvin, and Betty.Gidget (left) and Betty prefer the top bench.

Belly up

As summer heat goes up, so do the cat bellies.

Cinderbetty

Betty loves to squeeze herself through the hole of a cinderblock.Daisy has been doing this same trick for years (the photo below is from 2003).

Muffin making muffins

This video is probably funny only to me. But I adore Daisy's muffin-making sessions. Plus, her nickname is Muffin (as well as Puffin, O Puffy One, Puff the Magic Muffin -- all derived from her snooty habit of puffing or snorting in disgust when she sniffs another cat).

When I got this fleece scarf as a gift, I knew who would enjoy it most. I put it in front of Daisy, and she commenced kneading and purring. Our Christmas snow is seen through the window.

Autumn leaves

Today I realized what a tortoiseshell cat's abstract color pattern is all about: it's autumn camouflage. Find Liesl in the tree below.Daisy is not so camo, but she knows these chartreuse leaves complement her tangerine coloring. The dark spots on the leaves even match the beauty spots on her nose.

Daisy Digs Dogs: The Movie

I just rediscovered this 2004 video of Daisy and neighbor-dog Bella. I don't even remember taking it. My computer overfloweth with folder upon folder of kitty photos.

From our archive: Daisy does the dog

This photo was taken 5 years ago, when 2-year-old Daisy was best friends with our former neighbor's longhair chihuahua Bella. This past weekend Daisy had a reprise of her dog-lovin' days. Daisy played with our new neighbor's dog Binky, a mini dachshund mix who looks remarkably like Bella. Daisy liked this new ginger-colored dog immediately -- Daisy was as playful and open and relaxed and happy with this dog as before. She disdains other cats, but Daisy digs dogs.

Daisy on the fence

I got Daisy as a kitten 7 years ago, and she's spent probably half of that time perched on a fence. (Not figuratively, though. She's most definite in her opinions.) Picket walking is her specialty.

Cat-covered blankets

Is this a double-exposed safari photo? Why no, it's Daisy and her alter ego.
Toooo many cats: can you guess that Natalie and Betty loathe each other?
These cheezy thrift-store blankets get washed and cut up for use as protective wrapping for kitty beds during shipping.
