Pierre is gone

I am too devastated to be writing this yet, but I need to tell that Pierre was run over late Monday night. He was less than a year old, a former feral who had been tame only about four months. He was the most beautiful and charming and delightful kitty – he was like a crown jewel. I almost worshipped him.I will write more about Pierre later, when I’m feeling less shattered. At left is a “labels” link to previous posts about Pierre.

On top of this pain, I feel guilt for exposing my kitties to the dangers of the street. But even when the price is this high, I do not regret the freedom and joy we have by living so much of our lives outdoors.

I don’t want this blog to be a sad read with stories of kitty suffering. I can’t bear to hear such tales, even if they have a happy ending. So my memories of Pierre will be positive and life-affirming.

I am so sorry for your loss :( I remember all too well the pain of losing kitty friends to such things. Pierre had a better life because of you, and I'm sure he is happy and safe on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

I wanted to let you know that you inspired me to get a stray fixed. She adopted me two weeks ago, and I stumbled upon your etsy site when you were featured this past weekend. Through the links on your website, I was able to find a place that offers discount spaying and vaccinations. Deckster (formerly "Deck Kitty") has an appointment next week, and I'm very hopeful that I'll be able to find someone to give her a good home.

Thank you for doing what you do, and sharing it with the world.

Hi Jayne - I'm so sorry for the pain you are feeling right now.

I'm familiar with this kind of loss and hope that you will find comfort in your memories of Pierre.

Your kitties are terribly lucky to have you wrapped around their paws.

i'm so sorry for your loss! i'm forever amazed at the way our furry feline children can wrap themselves around our hearts. it's devastating when we lose them, but please take some consolation in the fact that pierre had a wonderful life because of you. it takes a very special person to open their heart and home to so many strays the way you have. you set quite the example for the rest of us cat lovers out there! keep up the good work, and treasure the memories of your sweet pierre.

Pierre reminds me so much of our Micah in this photo that I feel tears in my eyes. They both were such free and loving spirits that life on earth could not contain them for so long. I know you want him with you but he IS still with you. His spirit is everywhere you need him to be and memories of him are with you in your heart.

Touched by an Angel

We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.

Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.

We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.

I feel this, and I understand it, and I am so SO very sorry for your loss. It really is heart-wrenching. The end of an era. I have two rescues who are the little furry loves of my life, and I have been where you are. You are a wonderful person for giving Pierre the life that he had for as long as he had it . . . try to hold onto the good times and the good things.

Wishing you well. Hugs from Carolina.

I am so sorry about Pierre. I am sorry for your heartbreak, and for the empty place he will leave in your group.

Your blog and your work with the feral cats is more inspiring than you probably know; unfortunately all love involves risk. I wish you strength and peace of mind as regards your fine cat, Pierre.

Oh Jayne, I am so sorry to hear about your precious boy. He was definitely a special one and I'm just so glad that you were able to experience his light if even for a short time. And I have to say he was equally as lucky to have such a wonderful and caring mama. I shed a few tears at this post- being a kitty lover, I feel your loss- Pierre will be missed!

I have been reading your blog for several months now and you should know that it has brightened many a day for me. I love that it is hip and cool and witty (I love 'that's my hiney dude') and full of kitty adoration without the feeling of pink puffy heart kitty sweatshirts :). I love that you are taking care of so many kitties in need and that you take the time to share them with us. It's great to see someone who truly understands them and loves them- even with their quirks and attitudes and sometimes feral behavior. Though there is bound to be sadness and loss at times, this is a story with a happy ending!
